About Leak Detection

Our team use three different approaches to identify an escape of water. These are thermal imaging, acoustic testing, and tracer gas. Once we have established where the leak is coming from, we will be able to recommend the best process to correct the issues.

Thermal Imaging

As one of the most common approaches to leak detection, thermal imaging uses a camera to detect differences in temperature on surfaces. This helps an individual to identify where a leak could be coming from within a wall or flooring space.

Thermal cameras can identify where pipework lays and whether further work should be carried out in one area over another. This process is non-invasive and prevents unnecessary excavation from taking place.

Acoustic Testing

Even though thermal cameras are popular, there may be times where the condition of a building prevents this from being carried out. Acoustic testing uses devices to detect vibrations which have been caused by a stream of water.

Tracer Gas

Unlike the previous two approaches, tracer gas takes more time. The system in question needs to have all water drained and then have a tracer gas added. This is done under pressure and is made from 5% hydrogen and 95% nitrogen.

As hydrogen is a small molecule, the theory is that this gas will escape where the damage is in the pipework. Using a gas detector, this escape of gas can be located and the issue resolved.

What Causes Leaks?

There are several things within a home or business that can result in leaks. These include:

  • Water Mains
  • Pipework
  • Central Heating Systems
  • Underfloor Heating
  • Tanks

If an escape of water is not treated quickly it can result in several problems. These include damp, mould, subsidence, damage and more.
